ANGEL
Rescued in September 2013, aged 5 months. Tested FeLV/FIV NEGATIVE.
Abandoned. Deaf since birth. Found trying to fend for himself somewhere near a small feral cat colony.
Rescue Story
We had seen him for a few weeks, but he was too scared to come close but on one chilly and windy night, right after midnight we went looking for him and there he was!
We immediately tried to lead him to where some food and water containers were placed but he refused to follow us there, he then hid under a car.
We placed new containers with food and water closer to him and decided to wait nearby to make sure he’d eat.
We sat on a bench about half a block away from where he was, we were hoping he’d eventually come out to eat.
He then appeared out of the blue and ran towards us and threw himself at our feet; he started purring away and would not leave our side; he walked into the carrier by himself!
As soon as we arrived home, he started purring so loudly as if he knew he was finally safe!
The morning after, before going for his first vet checkup, we found him all curled up into the carrier sleeping like an angel (thus his name!) Nothing seemed to wake him up, not even the loudest noises.
Later that morning we finally realized he was completely deaf.
Although we lived in a very small place and were almost out of financial resources, there was NO WAY! we could leave this baby on his own out there.
Angel tested FeLV/ FIV NEGATIVE. He’s intelligent, playful and affectionate, however due to his deafness he needed some extra time to adjust.
He used to follow us around at all times to feel safe, if he lost sight of us he’d get scared and yowl, become agitated and start panting. Sometimes he would wake up in the middle of the night yowling full of anxiety.
UPDATE October 2013
After a couple of weeks, he still appears to be very irritable, insecure and over-attached. He becomes very anxious from time to time and starts panting.
He also has some sort of eating disorder that is causing him to have diarrhea. We are trying to change his feeding habits, but it hasn’t been easy so far.
We’ve read that caring for deaf cats is no different than caring for any cat, with a few special considerations. However, being DEAF and ABANDONED at only 5 months old is a whole different story!
Due to abandonment and deafness, Angel still has a lot of issues to resolve but on a more positive note we can say that he has already met our rescue Honey (rescued a week before Angel’s rescue) and they are already best pals!
UPDATE December 2013
Honey was adopted out and Angel is back on his own, missing his best friend. We tried to find a good home for Angel too, but it wasn’t easy because of his handicap and other behavioural issues.

Angel is improving one day at a time; he’s no longer confused nor disoriented as he used to be when he was rescued but he needs lots of patience and tons of love.
Abandonment has not been easy on this sweet fur baby who was left to fend for himself at such an early age. Although Angel no longer wakes up yowling and has made great progress since he was rescued, some aggresive behaviour towards other cats and insecurity issues remain.
UPDATE January 2014
Because of Angel, we decided to start our own cat Sanctuary, so we could offer a loving home to those that were regarded as “less adoptable” by some people.
Angel met our new rescue Gigi and they hit it off well. Gigi is patient and kind to him, like a big sister; they spend hours playing and having a good time.
Angel is finally learning to enjoy himself, a brand-new life full of love and care at the Sanctuary.
UPDATE 2023
Angel is now 10 years old and has been in the Sanctuary for 10 years. He suffers from Caudal stomatitis and recently underwent surgery to have most of his teeth removed. READ FULL UPDATE
