Help us help THEM!

Dear supporters,

It has been many months since I last found the strength and time to write on our blog.

The daily struggle just to stay on my feet, the extreme physical and emotional exhaustion caused by instability and advancing age, and the fact that the last few months have been even harder as we’ve had to deal with urgent cases of abandonment and abuse on the streets.

These past months we tended to some of the worst cases we’ve ever seen. Terminally ill cats left to die slowly on the streets, while people walked by with total indifference. Everyone sees what is happening, yet no one acts. Why? Because selfishness has become the norm in our society.

Since the end of August, we’ve rescued Toby, Holly, and little Cricket.

For Toby and Holly, all we could do was spare them further suffering. Despite everything we did, we arrived too late, and we lost them both. (Here you can watch my video speech about Toby’s case) But with our tiny Cricket we are still fighting — trying to heal him and give him another chance at life.

Since Cricket was rescued 15 days ago, two of his siblings were hit and killed by cars. If Cricket returns to the colony, he will face the same fate. And so, even in our difficult situation, we must do everything possible to secure him a safe home.

Of course, when so many heartbreaking cases arrive at once, the weight is immense — physically, emotionally, financially, and logistically. Combined with our daily struggle to survive in our difficult circumstances, it often feels like everything is collapsing. Sometimes the rational mind tries to find a way out and tells you that maybe it’s time to give up and to step back into a “normal” life.

But after those brief moments of weakness and confusion, our faith in God, our compassion, our unshakeable belief in doing good and the fact that we simply cannot turn our backs on an abandoned, sick and vulnerable animal, are what lifts us back to our feet, knowing that they have no one else but us and maybe a few other people in the world willing to sacrifice to help them.

And it’s in those very moments that we reaffirm our commitment:

if sacrificing our lives can ease even a fraction of the unfair and immense suffering they’re subjected to, then they are worth sacrificing.

This calling — giving up everything to help them — lives deep within us. We all know whether it’s part of who we are or not. And if it is, then you must nourish it and hold onto it, no matter what. In the end, it all comes down to the choices we make;

Circumstances can’t be an excuse.

We have chosen to help despite our circumstances:

We are immigrants with no family support system, no steady job, no money, no home of our own, older in age, and we didn’t even have access to healthcare until 2020.

We believe, we all have the power to help and the collective responsibility to do it no matter our circumstances.

Those who don’t, it’s just because they choose not to.

Returning to our current situation at the sanctuary, these past few months have been exhausting, and then sadly a new problem arises: We no longer receive donations as we used to, not even for these extreme animal cruelty cases.

For many months now, we have only asked for donations to cover urgent veterinary expenses, or asked for sponsors for just $5 a month, yet even so, we achieved little to nothing.

All this time, we have relied solely on 3 or 4 loyal supporters who have never turned their back on us and continue contributing.

And so, with all the new rescues and veterinary expenses we’ve faced recently, we honestly don’t know what else to do to encourage more people to help us.

We have given up everything in our lives to help, and we have no room for further sacrifices on our part.

So, this Giving Tuesday, if you could donate a little something—any amount—you would help us pay off vet bills, and above all, you would support everything we do on a daily basis to help homeless cats outside the sanctuary.  

Because if we don’t get support from more people, it will be impossible to continue helping feral or abandoned cats in need on the streets.
