Rescue Story
A week before finally rescuing Suzie, we had rescued Charlie but sadly we had to put him to sleep 24 hours after his rescue.
We could not bear the thought of losing another one, so we strived to bring Suzie to safety in Charlie’s memory.
The first time we saw Suzie, she was a tiny, orphaned kitten roaming disoriented at a public parking lot. She was very scared of humans and as we tried to approach her, she ran away.
A couple of days later, we found out that she had managed to find shelter in the backyard of a local factory were a few feral cats were living.
Placing a trap in the factory backyard would have meant trespassing so we couldn’t do it.
Paul then spent weeks ‘training’ Suzie to come out to get her wet food outside the factory, right where we could place the trap for her.
Paul fed Suzie wet food daily but last Friday he didn’t. He refilled her feeding station with just dry food so that she’d be more attracted to the strong smell of the fresh sardines we were planning to place inside the trap.
At dusk, we arrived at Suzie’s backyard, she immediately recognized the sound of our car and came out. Paul started to carefully set up the trap as planned while she watched all our moves from the top of a tree.
As soon as Paul walked away, she jumped off the tree and started to walk around the cage smelling the sardines. She hesitated for a short while but then she walked right in… Our plan had worked!
She was a bit agitated at first, but she didn’t panic. She was not aggressive; she never hissed nor growled at us on the way home.
We released her in what we now call “Charlie’s Room” and although she was understandably scared it seemed as though she immediately understood she was in good hands!
Thanks to Charlie, Suzie is finally safe.
