Angel is having dental surgery
Angel (10) was diagnosed with Stomatitis (incurable autoimmune disease) in April last year. He has been on meds (corticoids and oral gel) ever since and he was doing rather well until last weekend when he became lethargic, showing unequivocal signs of oral pain.
He stopped eating dry food first and now he cannot even swallow soft pâté.
We’re taking him to the vet tomorrow, he’s going for a checkup to evaluate whether he needs to have all his teeth pulled and bloodwork to see how his liver and kidneys are doing after of year of taking meds.

UPDATE April 28
We have good news and bad news. Good news first! Angel did very well during the checkup last Friday and his blood work results were purrfect! His kidneys, liver, and all the rest of the organs are well but his mouth and teeth are not!
Bad news is that he needs to have ALL his teeth pulled
He was in great pain so he had stopped eating before the checkup but since then, he’s been taking 2 painkillers a day (for 10 days) so he’s slowly starting to eat some wet food.
Hopefully, in two weeks he will be ready to have his OP. Fingers crossed!
UPDATE May 15
Finally, Angel is going for his OP! He’s scheduled to have all his teeth pulled tomorrow noon.
After being misdiagnosed a few times by different vets, lots of meds and months of struggle, we’re now hopefull that this dental surgery will help him be out of pain once he fully recovers and, most importantly, that he won’t have to keep on taking strong meds for the rest of his life.
UPDATE May 16
Dental surgery lasted 3 long hours but thankfully it all went well and Angel was home again by 9pm!

He was a bit dizzy but other than that he was so very happy to be going home
The vet explained that besides his stomatitis, Angel was also suffering from what is known as ‘Feline Tooth Resorption’ a condition in which the body begins breaking down and absorbing the fragments of the tooth; it causes great pain and that’s why he had stopped eating.
It was thought that all his teeth needed to be pulled, but once in the OR the vet made the decision of saving two that were healthy and strong. So now, Angel has one little fang and one premolar left.

So far, he seems to be recovering well as he ate all his RECOVERY paté for dinner a few hours after arriving home.

He’ll be on antibiotics, two painkillers a day and some dental gel needs to be applied on his swollen gums every 12 hours for the next 10 days.

Speedy recovery sweet Angel
