Cat Sanctuary News, Vet Care

Toby diagnosed with Hyperthyroidism and Cardiomegaly

Toby (10) was rescued on August 25, 2025. Abandoned, rather docile but very scared and stressed, painfully thin, injured and unable to walk. We rushed him straight to the vet clinic, where he was hospitalized and received urgent care.

The vet has confirmed several serious health problems: X-rays showed that Toby suffers from severe arthritis in his spine, breastbone and hind legs, so much so that he can barely walk or manage to stand for a few seconds before he collapses onto his side.

He was also diagnosed with Hyperthyroidism, Cardiomegaly (could progress to heart failure if left untreated) and Cachexy (weakness and wasting of the body due to severe chronic illness).

Hyperthyroidism is the cause of his weight loss, increased thirst and urination, rapid heart rate, panting, and weakness.

In his condition and with such limited mobility, there is no way he could have wandered far — or survived on his own — which makes it heartbreakingly clear that he was abandoned.

It is almost unbearable to imagine the pain and confusion Toby must have felt trying to fend for himself out on the streets — barely able to move, frightened, and left behind when he needed care the most. No animal deserves such cruelty.

Toby spent the first 24 hours upon his rescue, receiving urgent care and medication. Last night, he was released, and we prepared a quiet, comfy room to welcome him into safety and love. For the first time in probably a long time, Toby has a place of his own — warm, peaceful, and free of fear.

His diagnosis of Hyperthyroidism is especially concerning because without treatment, it could dangerously shorten his life. But with daily medication, a stress-free environment, and careful monitoring, there is hope that we can give Toby not only comfort, but also more years of life filled with love❤️

We’ve named him Toby (short for Tobias), meaning “God is good.” His name is a reminder that although his family failed him, God has given him a second chance at love and kindness, and we won’t fail him!

Toby’s condition is critical, and the road to recovery will be long and difficult — but we are not giving up on him. With medication, veterinary support, and endless TLC, we are determined to give him the comfort and quality of life he should have always known.

Please keep Toby in your thoughts and prayers 🙏— he needs every prayer and every bit of love he can get to help heal not only his exhausted body but also the wounds inflicted in his heart 💔

We are committed to giving him love and comfort, but we can’t do it alone. Please consider supporting Toby’s journey.
