Oliver succumbed to diabetes

Oliver succumbed to diabetes

It is with great sorrow that we inform you that yesterday afternoon, July 02, 2024, we lost our sweet Oliver to Diabetic Ketoacidosis (DKA).

On Sunday, Oliver stopped eating and drinking and became lethargic. During the night he started running a high fever and showed clear signs of discomfort and pain.

His body was no longer responding to insulin treatment, his blood pressure was high and his blood sugar levels kept getting higher.

On Monday morning, we rushed him to the vet, and he was hospitalized with IV fluids. Many tests were run, blood work, abdominal ultrasound, urine test, etc. He was given all kinds of meds, but nothing worked.

On Tuesday, his organs began to shut down and we had to make the hard decision of letting him go.

Oliver crossed the Rainbow Bridge all wrapped in love and tender care until the very end. Paul and I were by his side until he took his final breath.

For the first three years of his life, Oliver was abused and neglected until someone decided to abandon him and dropped him off at a feral cat colony; they did him and us a favor!

Oliver’s life changed the day we found him hiding under a truck, terrified and not knowing how to fend for himself.

We rescued him in July 2015. READ: Oliver’s rescue story

Despite being diabetic since 2018, Oliver was immensely happy and enjoyed his life at the Sanctuary to the fullest.

It was our privilege and pleasure to take care of him for nine years. He was a gentle giant, unique in every aspect, patient and loving like no other.

Oliver was that kind of cat that gives sense to all the struggle cat rescuers go through to save lives, he made every sacrifice worthwhile and gave us a thousand reasons to remember him forever more ❤🙏 Watch video >

Rest easy sweet boy, no more syringes, no more earlobe punctures, no more pain.

UPDATE07.09.2024

Today, it’s been a hard day for us at the sanctuary. A week after crossing the Rainbow Bridge, Oliver is finally home again 🏠❤🙏

It was all so sudden and unexpected, we can’t wrap our heads around the fact that Oliver is gone and all we have left is a keepsake urn with his ashes.

🌹Sweet Oliver, you may be gone from our sight but you are never gone from our hearts ❤❤
